New Zealand study and work programs for Filipino Nurses

The demand for Filipino nurses is still on its height as contrary to the belief that foreign countries have now declined to hire them. The drawbacks, however, are often seen on how the process of employment shall take place and the grounds on which the applicant shall be qualified for deployment. This results into desperation and compromise. A lot have resorted in Middle Eastern countries to address the problem of underemployment and underpayment of nurses in the Philippines. Amidst the tightened entrances of western countries to aspiring nurses, there is one country which openly invites Filipinos to come and study short courses which are relevant to their professions while earning from part time jobs then later on be employed as regular employees in their industries of choice.

New Zealand offers a variety of study and work schemes through domestic agencies for those who are willing to be schooled in a short period of time and at the same time earn money for daily consumption and home rentals from part time jobs. Although the over all payment which includes the tuition fees, placement fee and many other miscellaneous fees could reach for up to approximately Php 700,000.00, many Filipinos are enticed to avail of the program all for the hope that after the completion of the course, they could look for an employer which will pave their way to be employed regularly and will grant their working visas.

A student visa (or a limited visa granted for the purpose of study) is required for all people coming to New Zealand to study for more than three months. Study must be the main purpose of your visit.

To get a student visa you have to show you have enough money to meet your living costs during your stay. If you have a Student Visa, you may be able to work part-time, up to 20 hours per week, and full-time during scheduled holidays.

There are some types of employment that international students are not permitted to do. International students aren’t allowed to be self-employed. They must work as a worker (or employee) with an employment agreement, and not as an independent contractor.

Before offering you a job, employers will check that your visa contains the necessary conditions that allow you to work. If you wish to stay in New Zealand and work after you have finished your studies, you will need the right visa. International students who have achieved a New Zealand qualification may be allowed to gain experience in work related to their studies. Depending on what you study, you may be able to work in New Zealand for up to four years, and possibly even gain residence.

The New Zealand Registered Nurses badge

Nurses should be able to register with the Nursing Council of New Zealand before they could work as a registered nurse in the country.  The Nursing Council assesses each applicant on an individual basis and does not operate a system of reciprocal registration or enrollment except for Australian applicants. After successful registration, then the real journey begins.
