Nursing Research is perhaps one of the hardest subject every Filipino nurse had to go through college before earning their respective titles. From problem identification, hypothesis formation, data collection, interpretation and the list just goes on with all the mind-cracking tasks. Not to mention, the financial cost of getting a statistician and grammarian to assist with the validity and proper construction of the paper. It is considerably an aspect of the nursing school which all of us had focused our eyes on, making us think: "What is the importance of research in the nursing profession?"
Nursing research has a tremendous influence on current and future professional nursing practice, thus rendering it an essential component of the educational process. The role of nurses have changed overtime in various settings such as hospitals, community health care centers, clinics, schools, and companies. The need for adaptability and flexibility in health care delivery techniques and methods is highly evident since nursing is dynamic, as it is known before, and health demands of individuals varies with each other. However, amidst the changes in the trend of health care, the primary goal of a professional nurse remains the same: to be the client's advocate and provide optimal care on the basis of evidence obtained through research.
Nursing research ensures that the individuals are viewed as a whole when treatment and care is being planned for them, integrating their plan of care through a holistic approach. Research produces innovative and quality techniques, when done right, to address the ever evolving and varying health concerns of the clients.
The health field makes significant advances every day. As science unfolds and expands man's concept of the boundaries of medicine, we can expect that this will cause considerable and important leaps in the area of health and treatments. With Nursing Research, these new changes will continue to be implemented and developed into therapies and treatments that will ultimately bring faster healing and better quality of life to the patients who need them most.
Research may look like a burden to all of us during our lifetime at the nursing school, but considering its use in the actual field, we may just have missed to foresee the bigger picture. It does not only help nurses maintain integrity and accuracy in the delivery of care but also gives them confidence that their actions and plans are based on scientific studies with expected specific outcomes.
