The nationwide exploitation of nurses in the Philippines is not uncommon anymore. We are all exposed to hazardous and toxic environments where we are treated as mere 'trainees' when we apply as volunteers, rather than revered as professionals. Note that 'toxic' here doesn't only refer to the different diseases Filipino nurses have to combat everyday in different health care settings, it also portrays low and sometimes even zero compensation for the services we render.
As much as we want to seek assistance and aid for all these issues we face, it seems that we are all alone in the battle as no one, even the Philippine Nurses Association, has an accessible help line to cater such concerns.
There is a brighter hope now, however, as ANG NARS representative Hon, Leah Paquiz called out to PNA to put up a hotline available for nurses who have concerns over exploitation and bullying at work.
"There is a great public clamor for the PNA to TAKE THE LEAD in the protection of nurses' rights and welfare.
For years, many of our nurse professionals have experienced exploitation through having zero salary as false volunteers, no protection and security of tenure, and are even made to pay exorbitant fees as false trainees!
Most of them do not know who to turn to, since they are even bullied by their own superiors, deans, and chief nurses." said Paquiz at the 2016 PNA General Assembly last October 19, 2016 held at Crowne Plaza hotel.
She was then asked by PNA Governor Julius Dano to start drafting the guidelines and methodology of the planned help line. In addition, Nars Paquiz also proposed that rather than increasing the death and accident insurance, the 2017 welfare fund should be utilized for the said hotline instead.
