Nazaria Lagos: The Florence Nightingale Of Panay

During the Philippine Revolution, A woman from Dueñas, Iloilo donated her own hacienda to pave way for the establishment of a hospital for the wounded and sick Filipino soldiers.

Nazaria Lagos y Labrillaso, born August 28, 1851 in the barrio of Burongan, now called as Jaguimit, Dueñas, Iloilo, was named the “Florence Nightingale of Panay ”, due to her indispensable service to the the country by becoming an exceptional nurse to the revolucionarios.

Nazaria was married at the age of 12 to her second cousin Segondo Lagos, the Chief Sacristan of the Catholic Church with whom she had eight children.

She accomplished several humanitarian advocacy through forming the Red Cross in the Visayan region. Aside from becoming the Revolutionary Army hospital's director, she was also the soldiers' first nurse.

The nurse showed so much dedication for the freedom of the country as she even donated her very own hacienda for a hospital and gave away bamboo beds, chairs, tables, shelves, cabinets, and clothing materials for the revolucionarios. She cared for the wounded civilians and sick Filipino soldiers even after she had lost two of her children during a smallpox epidemic.

Sharing a trivia aside, she was the sewer of the Philippine flag that was raised in the Dueñas town square on June 12, 1899, the first anniversary of the proclamation of the country's independence in Kawit, Cavite by General Emilio Aguinaldo.

She died on January 27, 1945 at the age of 93. May we always remember nursing personalities as her in our country whose accomplishments can be a source of inspiration and motivation among Filipino nurses nowadays.
