A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that over a billion people will be infected with the H1N1 flu virus over the next two years.
The symptoms of the H1N1 flu virus are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. CDC recommends that if you experience flu like symptoms, you are advised to stay home from work or school and avoid contact with people for at least 24 hours after your fever has returned to normal.
If you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, dizziness, persistent vomiting, pain in the chest or abdomen, or if symptoms improve but then return along with a fever and cough, you should seek medical care immediately. Those with a chronic medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease, who are pregnant, or care for a young child, should seek immediate care for any flu symptoms as well.
Several health organizations have issued recommendations on preventing the spread of the H1N1 flu virus. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has advised individuals to follow simple everyday preventive measures such as washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you sneeze or cough, and to avoid as much as possible touching of the eyes, nose, and mouth. In addition to the above, they have also recommended using antimicrobial products.
