Filipino Nurses United urges PBBM to increase nurses’ monthly salary to P50K

MANILA — Appreciating the inaugural speech of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. mentioning the plight of the country’s nurses, the Filipino Nurses United (FNU) has urged the new administration to increase the entry salary of nurses to P50,000 a month.

Interviewed on Dobol B TV of GMA, FNU president Maristela Abenojar said their group will present a 10-point nurses’ agenda to the new administration.

With President BBM’s evident concern, FNU president Maristela Abenojar said they will present a 10-point nurses’ agenda to the new administration.

“Top most po doon sa 10 na laman ng agenda ay itaas ang sahod ng nurses sa mga pampubliko at pampribado … gawin po itong P50,000 a month. ‘Yan po yung entry salary,” Abenojar said.

It was learned that in private hospitals, some nurses only receive P8,000 to P10,000 monthly, while those working in public hospitals get P35,000 monthly under Salary Grade 15.

Abenojar, however, said many nurses do not get this amount because around 50,000 of them are only contractual workers.

She cited inflation and the living wage set by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) as the basis of their proposed P50,000 monthly salary.

Abenojar stressed that the FNU appreciated Marcos Jr.’s remark on improving public health during his inauguration speech on June 30, Thursday.

She revealed that around 316,000 of the 917,000 Filipino nurses chose to work overseas to meet the needs of their families amid the “economic crisis”.

This might cause the collapse of the healthcare system.

At the same time, the FNU official lamented that 71 percent of healthcare workers in the country have yet to receive their One COVID Allowance.

To recall, in October last year, Marcos Jr. promised to raise the salaries of nurses and healthcare workers across the country as part of his “Tawid-Covid, Beyond Covid” program if he is elected President in the 2022 elections.
