USA: Are You A New Nurse In The Block?

Are you a new nurse who recently moved to the U.S.? These ideas will help you find some of your basic needs until you become more familiar with your surroundings in this beautiful and big country.

One of the first things you should do prior to traveling is to research the specific area that you are relocating to. Simple internet searches can provide a wealth of information!

Below are samplings of locations you may wish to search in advance, or at the very least, inquire about once you arrive to your new home.

Local Churches – this information can usually be found in the phone book or if you have internet connection you can search for the closest one to you.

Walmart and Target – great places to shop for bargain prices from groceries to clothes to kitchen and bath utensils. These stores are located all throughout the United States.

Salvation Army/Thrift Stores – second hand stores with great bargain prices. They sell clothes, furniture, blankets, etc. Each location will vary in quality and selections.

Ethnic Grocery Store – this information can usually be found in the phone book. Great place to find those hard to find products that you would normally find in the grocery store in your country. Most of the ethnic grocery stores will also sell phone cards to your particular country of origin.

Bus Routes – if available in your city, the bus can be a great way to get from one place to another. Taxis can be a bit costly and the bus will be more economical. Most transportation systems offer thirty (30) day passes for a minimal cost of $20 to $30 dollars.

Library – your local library can be a great source of not only information, but also entertainment.  Most libraries have computers that allow you to access the internet and provide local information as well. Many locations allow you to borrow not only books, but also DVD movies. Membership to the library will be necessary, which usually entails having some type of identification such as a passport or a driver’s license/state identification.

Post Office – normally located throughout the neighborhood.

Moving to a new area can be a daunting and stressful experience for anyone, not only nurses. Try to find as many of the comforts you currently have at home, and search for them in your new city. This will help make the transition to your new home quicker and easier!
