Here's What To Answer When Someone Tells You You're Too Smart To Be Nurse

What do you do for a living? Oh I am a nurse. A nurse! As smart as you are, I would have thought that you were a doctor, the person to find a cure for cancer, or even a scientist.

Have you ever had a conversation like this? Maybe you have and maybe you haven’t but for those of us who have, let’s be honest and say that it makes us doubt what we do for a living. We second guess it because we begin to feel that we are not living up to the expectations that others have for us and we are not operating in the capacity that others feel that you should be operating in.

But I am here to tell you to be UNAPOLOGETIC about your decision of being a nurse.

I say this in the most respectful way, but in a manner in which you are humbly not apologetic. Listen. Everyone has an opinion about our life and the decisions that we make. At times, we do want and value the opinions of the RIGHT individuals because it is necessary for professional and personal development.

The reason I say we should be unapologetic is because there is a purpose in your role as nurses that only you can fulfill, no matter how many other nurses are in the world, there is uniquely something that you and only you can bring to the healthcare industry in your respective role as a nurse.

The thing about purpose is that everyone will not understand why you do what you do and that includes those closest to you and that’s ok because your purpose is not for everyone else to understand because it is your purpose not theirs. Does it sometimes hurt when those closest to you don’t understand why you do what you do? It absolutely does. You feel your husband, mom, sister, or friend should get it but they will not always get it and you have to accept that while moving on in your authentic purpose as a nurse.

So the next time someone tells you “Oh as smart as you are, I would have thought that you would have been a ___________________, here are three options that you can provide as your response:

Well thank you for the acknowledgement of my well-versed brain. I am a nurse because I have a purpose as a nurse that only I can fulfill.

I am appreciative of the compliment. With all of this smartness that I have, I am going to utilize my career as a nurse to change the face of the healthcare profession.

Absolutely, I could have been anything in the world that I want to be… Nursing chose me because of my divine purpose here on earth.

Remember if you were called to be a nurse, you are “In Health On Purpose.”
