Intravenous Training for Nurses

Initiating an intravenous line to a patient is one of the critical skills a nurse must learn regardless of her designated area. It is mutually known among nurses that the most challenging part of starting an IV is to patently insert the cannula to a patient's vein without blowing it up nor causing inflammation. Due to the significance of an IV line in administering care and treatment to the patient, the ANSAP or Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines, a group of Chief Nurses/Directors of Nursing Service of the government/private hospitals and community health organizations, introduced the Intravenous Training Program.

Intravenous Training is a three-day program designed to enhance the nurses' knowledge, skills and attitude in the delivery of their expanded role as intravenous nurse therapists. Venipuncture techniques are used to establish catheter lines for various IV therapies such as hydration, blood transfusions and medication administration. IV therapy training programs for nurses are designed for individuals who are licensed in the field of nursing, However, presently, only Registered nurses are allowed to undergo this program due to the restriction of the procedure to nursing aides.

Lectures and demonstrations will be enforced during the 3-day program. The trainees are then expected to show competency in the return demo on the following:

a. Initiating and maintaining peripheral IV therapy infusions
b. Administering IV drugs
c. Administering and maintaining blood and blood components
d. Preparing and maintaining Total Parenteral Nutrition

e. One-on-One IV insertion under the direct supervision of a trainer/preceptor

After successfully passing the demo, the trainees will be required to accomplish the following IV cases as required by ANSAP:

-3 cases of initiating/maintaining peripheral IV insertions;
-3 cases of administering IV drugs; and
-2 cases of administering and maintaining blood and blood components.

After successfully complying with the Lecture and Practicum, the following are the requirements for initial issuance of IVT license card:

a) Certificate of Attendance of the participant. (photocopy and original);
b) IVT Accomplished Requirements form (accomplished 3+3+2 IVT case requirement), duly-signed by the chief nurse.
c) Two (2) pcs. of 2×2 ID picture;
d) Photocopy of current/valid PRC card (front and back)
e) Processing fee

There are several hospitals all over the Philippines which offers the program under the regulation of ANSAP. Note that the IVT license is only valid for 3 years. A day after the due date, the card will be considered expired and the holder should undergo an update training for renewal.

It is also very important to ponder upon the legal implications of the training in our practice as according to the RA 9173 or the Philippine Nurses Act of 2002, all registered nurses are mandated to be a certified IV therapist.

In conclusion, the paramount of the development of the program is to ensure that Filipino nurses administer safe and effective care to patients requiring parenteral supplements and medications.
