Many Saudis and foreigners praise Filipino nurses working in various hospitals, polyclinics and health centers all over the Kingdom.
Filipinos in Saudi Arabia are either migrants or descendants of the Philippines living in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is currently the largest hirer of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), and has the largest Filipino population in the Middle East. Filipinos make up the fourth-largest group of foreigners in Saudi Arabia, and are the second-largest source of remittances to the Philippines.
However, a threat is seen in the rocketing employment schemes for Filipino workers in Saudi as the government is eyeing a shift in the workforce from hiring mostly foreign laborers to their very own citizens.
This is an attempt to create more jobs for Saudi nationals than they currently occupy. The government claims that about 2.6 million jobs requiring skilled work are occupied by non-Saudis. Incomes among Saudi citizens will be much improved given that they are prioritized in job opportunities and hiring, they said.
Some believe that the Ministry of Labor and Social Development can accomplish this task alone and that there was no need to set up such a commission. Currently, Saudi youth are trained well but are not given good jobs where they can put what they have learned into practice. The labor market continues to suffer from unemployment, a high percentage of expatriate recruitment, low productivity and poor utilization of local human resources.
As for the Medical platform, most nursing positions in various hospitals and medical clinics are presently occupied by Filipino nurses. At the turn of the Millenium, the Philippine nursing industry has seen a colossal exodus of Filipino nurses bound for the KSA.
With this foreseen development, will it significantly affect the standing of the employment patterns of Many Filipino nurses? or will the kingdom remain dependent on the world-class, compassionate and competent nursing care that the Filipino nurses could offer?
