DOH To Do A Signature Campaign For The Lifting Of TRO On Contraceptives

“The relevance of this gathering is fueled by the critical challenges we are facing everyday to promote the rights of couples and individuals to plan their families, big or small. The standing TRO on the Certification of Modern Methods of Contraceptives issued by the Supreme Court is one of the roadblocks ahead. We have other glaring issues in front of us that this conference hopes to address: fragmented health care delivery system, lack of general political commitment, dearth of skilled manpower, sustainable budget and funding to name a few. The research and data presented in this conference will lead to solutions overcoming obstacles while the eager participation of different sectors shall ignite new ideas and broaden networks to advance our actions,” Health Secretary Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial explained.

The Department of Health (DOH) together with the Commission on Population (POPCOM) and the Forum for Family Planning and Development, Inc. hope to gather ONE MILLION SIGNATURES so that the Supreme Court will now lift the TRO on contraceptives. This is the unified Call to Action as they spearhead the first National Family Planning Conference in Novotel, Quezon City with the theme: ‘Accelerating Progress in Family Planning: Policies, Good Practices and Future Directions'.

Teenage pregnancy rates across the world have declined in the past two decades except in the Philippines, according to a new survey.

The report by the UN says the Philippines topped the regional list of Asian countries that continued to have the greatest number of teenage pregnancies.

It also says that one in 10 young Filipino women - between 15 and 19 years of age - is already a mother. A few factors adding to the continued increase in birth rates include having multiple sexual partners as well as low condom use. Social attitudes towards family planning in the Philippines are heavily influenced by the Catholic Church.

Family Planning is one of the pillars to ensure rapid reduction of maternal death and at the same time achieving the desired family size of women or couples among the poorest of the poor families in the country.
