Nursing in the Philippines has long been tied with the Military as the first Filipinos who practiced nursing were the distinguished women, usually wives or partners of high ranking Filipino military officials and belonged to noble families, who were involved in aiding the wounded soldiers. Famous names were Melchora Aquino, Josephine Bracken, Dona Hilaria de Aguinaldo, Trinidad Tecson - to name a few.
Surprisingly, lots of nurses nowadays are considering to be military nurses despite the risks and threats attached therein. Thinking aside the pride and honor to serve the country, the pay is also quite enticing. So what is it really like to be a military nurse?
According to Lydia and Ronald Venzon, Authors of the 11th edition of 'Professional Nursing in the Philippines', Nursing Service in the military seeks to provide the highest quality of nursing care to patients: in-patients in the hospitals and out-patients in the dispensaries. The medical corpsmen are highly trained personnel who help in the care of patients, especially males. In times of emergency, military nurses and attendants are authorized to do other medico-surgical procedures like circumcisions, suturing of wounds, and other duties that may be required of them.
Being a part of the Military also has sparkling benefits, this includes, but not limited to: High Salary rate and allowance, Hazard pay, overseas pay when assigned to foreign countries for schooling or missions, Hospitalization and free medical benefits for parents and dependents, Military schooling and basic training, and the opportunity to travel abroad.
No wonder why some nurses greatly aspire to become military nurses. However, take heart that to be a military nurse means to completely commit your life and service to the country, thus, it entails colossal sacrifices and risks.
