Rolando Espina, also called Nonoy, is one of the many prides of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental. He is currently based in Dublin, Ireland as he works there as a Nurse in St. Vincent's University Hospital. I know it isn't so special to hear about Pinoy nurses working in European hospitals as we are the number one producer of quality and well-trained nurses worldwide. So what's so special about this guy? Well, to cut it short, this amazing man ran the ultra marathon in Greece and ended up finishing it victorious.
"Saw mountains, lots of it! on a serious note, the first 50 or so kms was not that bad until the the start of the climb thinking that was it and then they told you to turn left and lo and behold the steepest and dangerous mountain trail I've ever seen! It was by far the scariest part of the race." he wrote on a Facebook post. Just imagining how challenging the race was by the way he told his feat already makes me sweat and feel tired. I mean, this must not be a regular marathon. Running on a 50-km plain road would already give you a 'broken leg' sensation.
The race lasted for about 2 or more hours but at least it wasn't draggy as they passed by stunning scenes; the magnificent ruins of ancient Greece and the golden coast lines. Good way to divert your mind out of exhaustion.
He also added how he survived and where he got all his determination and perseverance, he said: "Everytime my body tells me to quit, I reminded myself of what our eldest sister is going thru. I knew Nanay is always there to give me that extra energy". Well, I couldn't agree more. Where would we all be without the support of our family? Kudos to this man for the emphasis on that note.
The most rewarding part for Nonoy was probably at the end of the race. Yes, because it's finally over, and yes again, because he was victorious. "Coming in to Sparta and greeted by the locals and Tourist, children riding there bikes asking what's my name and where I'm from. Highlights is def seeing my crew for the last time waiting for me with flags ready, running the street hearing the Cheers from everyone, some shouting Bravo Philippines! The tears of Joy just kept flowing until I've finally touch King Leonidas foot." he said happily. What could be more heartwarming than seeing other nationalities and your fellow Pinoys greet you with pride and cheerfulness? Indeed, this man is not only a pride of the Philippines, but of all Negrenses and of all Nurses too!
